To finish the semester everyone in the class was instructed to make a book trailer. I never heard of a book trailer, but this ended up being one of my favorite assignments. A book trailer is similar to a movie trailer because it is a preview that makes the viewer want to see more! To make a book trailer you take pictures or video clips of particular pages in the book that you think will intrigue the viewer. Once you have chosen these sections of the book you can make a trailer narrating the pages and engage the audience. This assignment was very different than anything I have ever done so I was excited to get started! To begin this project I searched through a selection of science trade books. I went to the curriculum library at Mount Saint Mary College and began to look for a book about plants. I chose the book, " A Seed is Sleepy", written by Dianna Hutts Aston and illustrated by Sylvia Long. I picked this book because I liked the formatting, the book was written using poetic language, but also provided interesting facts on each page. I also really liked the illustrations found throughout the book. This book is non-fiction and provides the reader with some interesting facts about seeds across the world. Once I found my book I completed a handout to give to my class that included the title, author, and illustrator of the book, a synapse of the book, how I would use this book in a classroom, a and standards that could be used based on the book, you can see this here. Next, I created a storyboard where I can organize the photos I chose from the book to intrigue my audience. I used Google Slides to complete my storyboard and I wrote a script in the notes to follow so I knew what to say when I was narrating, you can find this here. After I finished this, I moved onto making the actual trailer, I used the application called VoiceThread. This is where you can upload pictures or videos then add an audio clip along with those attachments. I never used this application before but it was really simple to use and I would definitely want my future students to be able to use it for projects and other assignments. Once I finished using the VoiceThread application my book trailer was complete, here is where you can find it. I really liked the outcome of my project and I thought this was creative and fun! I would definitely want to use this with my future students because it is a great way for students to share great books with one another. I liked this project so much that I wrote this as a lesson for my unit plan. This is a way for students to use technology and learn about books from any genre!
We all have heard of climate change and global warming but how much do we truly know about this topic? Climate change is any change in our climate including wind, precipitation, temperature, and much more. Global Warming is any changes in temperature across the Earth. Now that we know what these terms mean, let's dive in a little further about this topic. Climate change has been a huge discussion in recent years because scientists have been warning us about these changes that are occurring right now. These changes are harmful to living and non-living things on Earth. Did you know that between 1901 and 2012 the Earth's temperature has risen by .89 degrees, the amount of rainfall has significantly increased and sea levels have risen about 19cm across the world due to ice glaciers melting? Most scientists explain these phenomena by the "Greenhouse Effect", this is the idea of the Earth's atmosphere allowing sunlight to shine through a blanket of greenhouse gases, then once it reaches earth the land and water absorb the sunlight energy, then the energy goes all the way back into the atmosphere through infra-red rays. However, some energy does go back into space, while a lot stays in the atmosphere causing the Earth to warm up. If the greenhouse effect continues to become stronger, the Earth would just keep warming up, causing harm for plants, animals, and even us! Greenhouse gases come from things like cars, planes, engines, and big industries. Humans are producing more waste than ever before and this waste produces smoke, fumes and water vapor. As these gases are getting trapped inside the atmosphere, the Earth's surface is becoming warmer, this is called Global Warming. Climate change causes land and water to expand and ice sheets to melt, habitats can disappear and a cycle of violent weather can occur. However, there is something each and every one of us can do to make a difference! People can help out by carpooling, walking, planting trees, reducing, reusing, and recycling. By doing these things we can take better care of our Earth! I accessed a lot of this information from this article. I picked this article because I believe climate change is a very important topic and it is something we discussed during this semester. I think it is crucial that the next generations learn about this because this Earth is their home and they will have to take care of it. The more people know about this issue the better the chances are that the problem is resolved. I would use this in my classroom and let the students do projects on ways they can help climate change. I would also let my students pick any news article that is appealing to them because it is an interesting way to learn new things. I think news articles would help students learn scientific concepts and topics in a different exciting way! 
During the first half of my Science and Technology Methods course, my classmates and I broke into groups and all taught two science lessons to a fourth grade class. This was the first time I was going to teach to a class and I wasn't really to sure what to expect. I am so happy I got to experience teaching a class and being able to learn from my peers while they got the chance to teach the class. I thought I learned from this experience a lot more than if I just read articles and books about how to teach. I was able to observe the actions of students, for example, what excited them, distracted them, engaged them and much more. This experience overall added to my understanding to student learning because I was able to see what students benefit from in a classroom and some successful teaching methods. I learned that students really need to have an organized set of notes so they can easily follow along and retain the information they are learning. I noticed that when students weren't sure what was asked of them it caused confusion which ultimately meant they weren't learning because they were distracted. The groups that taught with a clear set of notes and expectations had a better response from the students. The first day of teaching my group and I handed out flowers colored red, yellow, and green to check for the students understanding. Although it sounded creative and fun for the kids to use, they became a huge interference with the students' learning. This made me realize that some things might sound good on paper but could be difficult to successfully implement in a classroom. I also realized how important time management is in a classroom for it to function properly. The more planned and organized a lesson it really shows in the students work and learning. Students need time to write notes, ask questions, and discuss their learning but teachers need to make sure not to rush so students can do this. I learned about how each lesson should focus on the five E's: engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate. I understand that students need to be engaged to really learn about a topic. In my future class I want to find interesting ways to engage my students and get them excited to learn! I noticed that the more engaged the students were then the better the outcome was. Confidence is also very important while teaching. Students can tell when someone is well prepared when they are teaching a lesson and when they are unsure of themselves. It is so much more beneficial when the instructor is really educated on the topic they are teaching because then more information can be provided to the class. Through fieldwork, I learned that it is a great idea to provide the students with links, books, articles, etc. for the student's inquiry lesson plans. I wasn't sure what a direct or inquiry lesson plan exactly was prior to fieldwork but now I feel like I understand more about this. I was able to watch different groups approach these lesson plans in several ways which was beneficial for my understanding of teaching. I also learned what I needed to work on personally. I knew it would be difficult to control a class but now I realized it is something that is very important in order to teach. I also realized I need to work on speaking louder and with more confidence because it truly does make a difference. I'm happy that I was able to teach in front of a full class and watch how others teach as well. Being the first group to teach was a little unsettling because I didn't know what was really expected of me, but I learned a lot through this experience. I'm excited for next semester when I get another chance to teach again in front of a full class! Now I feel like I will be more prepared and will know my expectations next time around. I cannot wait to learn more about teaching and myself!
Today in class we were broken into groups and we all were told to pick a topic under the study of Earth Science that we were not too familiar with so we can then teach a lesson to the class after learning some more about it. My group and I chose to teach about Earth's surface, we made a lesson teaching about Pangaea, continental drift, the layers of the earth and the future of the Earth. We know now that to start off a lesson we need a pre-assessment. My group and I wanted to try something different to pre-assess the class's knowledge so we used the website Mentimeter. This was my first time using this application, it was so fun and unique! Mentimeter allows the user to post questions, then has a code to share with the class, and everyone can see the answers emerge in real time. I thought this was such an innovative way to ask and answer questions. We pre-assessed the class using this application and we were able to see all of the answers appear on the board and we were able to discuss them as they were posted. Later on in the lesson we stopped, where we checked for understanding and used the mentimeter once again. I love the immediate feedback this application provides because then it makes it easier to discuss and explore other's answers. At the end of our lesson, we used Mentimeter to assess what everyone learned from the presentation. This allowed us to quickly access everyone's thoughts and talk about them in real time. I loved using this and I would use this in my future classroom. This is an engaging and exciting way to assess information and openly discuss topics.
Here is the big question, why do teachers need inquiry to teach science? In my opinion, it is because science is not a direct answer. Science explores and with new technology we go deeper and deeper to discover things. The principle in science is uncertainty. Scientific knowledge is fundamentally uncertain, science is uncertain because it is human activity and we are always changing. This is why it is so important for teachers to ask students why and encourage them to explore. We want our future students to investigate and want to learn more about science on their own. As future educators it is important to implement wonder into students. Science is such an interesting topic because there is so much unknown and so much to explore.
Today in fieldwork I have learned how crucial it is for the students to have fun while learning! I was able to observe the students and I noticed how thrilled they became when kahoot was introduced. Group three conducted two experiments with the students today and it went great! The lesson started by the teachers pre-assessing the content from the last class through a kahoot that asked questions about plant morphology and reproduction. I thought this was a great idea for the students to get engaged, they were really excited to compete in kahoot! Once the teachers told the students in the class that they were going to play kahoot, the energy in the room shifted. Kids were eager to begin the lesson!I think it is so important for the students to have fun throughout their day. School should be a place of learning but also enjoyable! The students were ready to compete and show how much they remembered from the last class. I thought this set the tone for the entire lesson because the students were now enthusiastic about the lesson and were motivated to learn! I have learned that if students are engaged from the very beginning then the outcome of the lesson will be more meaningful. I think it is very important to have creative and different ways to pre-assess because it could be very boring if a teacher just hands out a worksheet of questions to see what the students already know. Throughout this course, I would like to learn other creative ways to pre-assess my future students.
During fieldwork today I have learned how important it is to have an organized lesson plan. Group 2 began their lesson plan on vegetative organs and plant tissues. Today was a direct instruction lesson plan, therefore the teachers gave the students a note packet to help follow along with the notes. The packet seemed well organized which helped the students write their notes and understand what they were learning. I liked how the notes had a pencil in the corner of the page to let the students know when they should be writing. After seeing how well an organized note packet kept the students in order and on track I realized how important this truly is. I have learned that students work better when it is clear what is expected of them. Having an organized note packet will benefit the students learning experience. I also really loved how this group had a plant waiting for each student at their table. The students were able to observe their plants and could write down all of the things they noticed(smell, touch, size, parts, etc. ). I thought this was a great way to peak the students interest in the topic and have them stay engaged. The students were able to have a visual aid right in front of them to help them learn about this topic. In my future classroom, I would love to bring in as many real-life examples for my students to help them have a better understanding. These are definitely some concepts I would like to incorporate in a classroom. I thought this group did a great job overall and the students seemed to really enjoy what they were learning. It seemed like the group was well prepared to teach this lesson and it was very interesting!
I remember loving science in elementary school, the science projects throughout the year made me excited to go to class. My earliest memory was learning about plants and the entire class received a cup, dirt, and seeds. We all planted our seeds and checked up on them everyday then report about it in our science journals. I thought it was so incredible learning about the process of photosynthesis then being able to actually watch my plant grow. The following year, I remember my teacher created a butterfly habitat where we watched 5 caterpillars turn into butterflies. This was so exciting to me to be able to watch these caterpillars morph into beautiful butterflies throughout the weeks. Everyone in the class would write observations on the metamorphosis process and share their thoughts with a group. Once the butterflies were ready to be released, the class went outside and watched the butterflies fly away. This is a memory that I will always have and something I would like to do with my future class. Later on in middle school, I remember making homemade ice cream in chemistry class. This was so much fun because I was learning about chemistry, which could be a hard topic, while doing something really fun. Throughout high school, we mostly did group projects, that’s something I really enjoyed doing. One memory from high school that has stuck with me is making tie-dye shirts in my chemistry class. I thought this was a great experiment because it was something that was engaging and I created a tie-dye shirt that I was able to keep! Throughout my entire school career I loved science, maybe it was the fun experiments and projects I participated in, or my great teachers, but I’m grateful for all of my experiences.
I loved science and I wanted to pursue a career in this field. I came to Mount Saint Mary College as a bio major and was really excited about my classes. Throughout the semester I started to change my mind about a career in science, and found teaching to be a better fit to me. I am eager to teach science to my future students because my teachers and great experiences during elementary school shaped my love for science. When I teach my future students I want to take away the stereotype that only men are scientist. Women are scientist too! I would like to introduce the book Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World by Rachel Ignotofsky, this book is amazing to show students because women are usually overshadowed in this field but they have made incredible advances in the world. I want everyone in my classroom to find a love for science and not lose it. Science is the knowledge and study of the natural world based on facts that have been learned through experiments and observations. I'm not sure if my point of view of science will change throughout the years. I find it to be fascinating and the best way to learn about this subject is through engaging activities. Some concepts in science could be quite difficult to fully understand, therefore, it is important to make lessons hands on and interactive.
Today during Science and Technology Methods my professor, Dr. Smirnova, brought in her husband, Dr. Michael Edelstein to give a lecture on climate change and The Climate Reality Project. Dr. Edelstein has been teaching at Ramapo College for the past forty-four years and is a member of the Climate Reality Project. The Climate Reality Project was created by Al Gore after he was influenced by his professor to explore the issue of climate change. This is a non-profit organization involved in education and advocacy related to climate change.
Dr. Edelstein taught me that the earth is a closed system in regard to matter but an open system with regards to energy. However, the quality of matter can be degraded therefore we must be cautious of our actions. All around us are opened and closed systems, which is something new I learned and found to be very interesting. It is important to notice the impact of our actions. For example, we should all find use in renewable energy because the sun, as of now, is a constant source of energy. Yet, we use nonrenewable energy, fossil fuels, mostly because of the financial profits companies make. The use of fossil fuels only further damages our Earth. For example, the glaciers are melting, and it is impossible to refreeze these glaciers because we passed that point already. The more ice that melts means there will be less reflectivity, hence the Earth will absorb more heat which creates a never-ending cycle of more ice melting and a warmer Earth. Due to all of this the oceans are warmer, storms are worse, weather patterns are changing, droughts and fires are more common, etc. In general, we are constantly changing the habitability of the Earth permanently.
